What is Aortic Root Valve Dysfunction?

Aortic root valve dysfunction refers to problems involving the aortic root โ€” the portion of the aorta connected to the heart โ€” and the aortic valve that regulates blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta. The condition can lead to aortic regurgitation (backflow of blood) or aortic stenosis (narrowing), both of which strain the heart and reduce its pumping efficiency. It can occur due to genetic conditions (like Marfan syndrome), high blood pressure, infection, trauma, or age-related degeneration. Without timely treatment, it can lead to heart enlargement, arrhythmias, and heart failure.

Understanding the Aortic Root Valve Dysfunction

The aortic root houses the aortic valve and the openings to the coronary arteries. When the root dilates or becomes structurally abnormal, it can impair valve function. - Aortic Regurgitation โ€“ The valve does not close properly, allowing blood to flow back into the heart. - Aortic Stenosis โ€“ The valve becomes stiff or narrowed, reducing forward blood flow. Aortic root valve dysfunction may be detected during a routine echocardiogram or after symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or fainting spells appear. Early detection and treatment are critical to preventing irreversible heart damage.

Diagnosis & Treatment Process

1

Initial Evaluation

Physical exam, medical history, and symptom review.

2

Imaging Tests

Echocardiogram, CT angiography, MRI to assess root size and valve function.

3

Medical Management

Blood pressure control, medications for heart failure symptoms.

4

Surgical Planning

Decision between valve repair, valve replacement, or root replacement.

5

Procedure

Open-heart surgery or minimally invasive approaches.

6

Postoperative Care

ICU monitoring, gradual recovery, and rehabilitation.

Treatment Options

Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement

Preserves the patientโ€™s natural valve while replacing the diseased root.

Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)

Mechanical or biological prosthetic valve replacement.

Composite Graft Replacement

Replacement of both the aortic root and valve.

Endovascular Repair (TEVAR)

Minimally invasive option for select cases.
