What is Aortic Root Valve Dysfunction?
Aortic root valve dysfunction refers to problems involving the aortic root — the portion of the aorta connected to the heart — and the aortic valve that regulates blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta. The condition can lead to aortic regurgitation (backflow of blood) or aortic stenosis (narrowing), both of which strain the heart and reduce its pumping efficiency.
It can occur due to genetic conditions (like Marfan syndrome), high blood pressure, infection, trauma, or age-related degeneration. Without timely treatment, it can lead to heart enlargement, arrhythmias, and heart failure.
Understanding the Aortic Root Valve Dysfunction
The aortic root houses the aortic valve and the openings to the coronary arteries. When the root dilates or becomes structurally abnormal, it can impair valve function.
- Aortic Regurgitation – The valve does not close properly, allowing blood to flow back into the heart.
- Aortic Stenosis – The valve becomes stiff or narrowed, reducing forward blood flow.
