What is Atrial Myxoma Excision?

Atrial Myxoma Excision is performed to remove a cardiac myxoma – the most common benign tumor inside the heart. Although noncancerous, these tumors can obstruct blood flow, cause embolisms, or trigger severe cardiac symptoms. The procedure is usually done via open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass to ensure complete tumor removal and prevent recurrence.

Understanding Atrial Myxoma and Its Risks

Atrial myxomas are rare, noncancerous tumors that typically form in the left atrium of the heart. While benign, they can cause serious problems such as blocking blood flow, producing emboli that may travel to the brain (causing a stroke), or leading to arrhythmias. Symptoms often include shortness of breath, palpitations, fainting spells, and sometimes sudden cardiac death. Surgical excision is the only definitive treatment, and early intervention significantly improves outcomes.

Treatment Journey for Atrial Myxoma Excision

1

Diagnosis & Pre-Surgical Assessment

Echocardiography, MRI, or CT scans confirm the presence, size, and location of the tumor.

2

Surgical Planning

Cardiac surgeon reviews imaging and determines the safest approach.

3

Tumor Excision

Performed under general anesthesia with cardiopulmonary bypass; the tumor is carefully removed with part of the atrial wall if needed.

4

Postoperative Monitoring

ICU observation to monitor heart rhythm, blood pressure, and recovery.

5

Rehabilitation & Follow-up

Gradual return to daily activities with regular echocardiograms to monitor for recurrence.

Related Cardiac Treatments

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

Restores blood flow to the heart by bypassing blocked arteries.

Heart Valve Replacement

Replaces damaged heart valves to ensure proper blood flow direction.

Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Surgical repair of a weakened and enlarged aorta to prevent rupture.
