Balloon Valvuloplasty

Balloon Valvuloplasty is a non-surgical cardiac procedure that uses a balloon-tipped catheter to widen narrowed heart valves, improving blood flow and relieving symptoms of valve stenosis.

What is Balloon Valvuloplasty?

Balloon Valvuloplasty, also called Balloon Valvotomy, is a procedure used to treat heart valve stenosis—a condition where a valve becomes narrowed and restricts blood flow. A thin catheter with a balloon at its tip is inserted into a blood vessel and guided to the affected valve. The balloon is then inflated to stretch the valve open, improving circulation and reducing symptoms like breathlessness, chest discomfort, and fatigue.

Understanding Valve Stenosis and the Role of Balloon Valvuloplasty

Heart valve stenosis can occur in the mitral, aortic, tricuspid, or pulmonary valves. This narrowing forces the heart to work harder, leading to symptoms and potential complications like heart failure. Balloon Valvuloplasty is most commonly used for mitral valve stenosis (often due to rheumatic heart disease) but can be applied to other valves in select cases. It is performed under local or general anesthesia by an interventional cardiologist using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance. The procedure is less invasive than open-heart surgery and offers quicker recovery times.

Treatment Journey for Balloon Valvuloplasty

1

Diagnosis & Imaging

Echocardiogram, ECG, and cardiac catheterization to confirm valve narrowing.

2

Pre-Procedure Preparation

Fasting, medication adjustments, and anesthesia planning.

3

Catheter Insertion

A catheter with a balloon is guided to the narrowed valve.

4

Balloon Inflation

The balloon is inflated to widen the valve opening.

5

Post-Procedure Monitoring

Observation in a cardiac care unit before discharge.

6

Recovery & Follow-Up

Gradual return to activities and scheduled echocardiograms
