Carotid Artery Stenting

Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure that opens narrowed carotid arteries using a stent, restoring blood flow to the brain and reducing the risk of stroke.

What is Carotid Artery Stenting?

Carotid Artery Stenting is a procedure used to treat carotid artery stenosis—narrowing of the arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. The condition is often caused by atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) and can lead to transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or stroke. During CAS, a small mesh tube (stent) is placed inside the artery to keep it open, ensuring uninterrupted blood flow to the brain.

Why Carotid Artery Stenting is Performed

Carotid artery stenosis can be asymptomatic or may cause warning signs like temporary vision loss, weakness, or speech difficulties. If left untreated, it significantly increases the risk of stroke. CAS is recommended for: - Patients with significant artery narrowing (typically >70%) - Individuals at high surgical risk for carotid endarterectomy - Patients with prior neck surgery or radiation therapy - Cases where less invasive intervention is preferred

Treatment Journey for Carotid Artery Stenting

1

Diagnosis & Imaging

Carotid Doppler ultrasound, CT angiography, or MR angiography to confirm narrowing.

2

Pre-Procedure Preparation

Blood-thinning medications and anesthesia planning.

3

Catheter Insertion

Catheter is inserted via the groin or wrist artery.

4

Balloon Angioplasty

Balloon is inflated to widen the artery.

5

Stent Placement

A mesh stent is positioned to keep the artery open.

6

Post-Procedure Monitoring

Observation in a recovery unit for 12–24 hours.

7

Follow-Up

Imaging and medication management to prevent re-narrowing.

Related Vascular Procedures

Carotid Endarterectomy

Surgical removal of plaque from the carotid artery to restore blood flow.

Peripheral Angioplasty

Balloon widening of narrowed arteries in the legs or arms.

Cerebral Angiography

Imaging procedure to visualize brain blood vessels for diagnosis.
