What is a Cystectomy?
Cystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the urinary bladder, either partially or completely. It is most commonly performed to treat invasive bladder cancer, but may also be required for other serious bladder conditions such as severe trauma, interstitial cystitis, or congenital abnormalities. Depending on the extent of the disease, the surgeon may perform a partial cystectomy (removing only a portion of the bladder) or a radical cystectomy (removing the entire bladder along with nearby lymph nodes and organs).
Understanding the Cystectomy Procedure
Cystectomy is a complex surgical intervention that requires careful planning, especially for patients with bladder cancer. Radical cystectomy often involves removal of nearby organs โ in men, the prostate and seminal vesicles; in women, the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and part of the vagina.
